OC 500’s Place in the Pulpit; Man’s Lamb Chops

Howard and Roberta Ahmanson recently hosted another intriguing salon at their family office on Von Karman, providing the Baroness Caroline Cox, a long-standing member of the British House of Lords, a platform to talk about her ongoing efforts to give voice to peoples under religious prosecution around the world—you can check out her book titled “The Very Stones Cry Out” for more. Some cocktail chitchat before her talk brought word that our recent OC 500 book of influential community members figured prominently in a recent sermon by the Rev. David Juelfs at Redeemer Presbyterian Church of America in Newport Beach. So did Paul’s Letter to the Corinthians—especially the part about his “thorn in the flesh,” a passage generally interpreted as allegory for the virtue of humility … The Pacific Life TV spot that synchronizes tail slaps by its trademark humpback whales with the sounds of a marching band’s brass line was a pitch-perfect marketing approach during college football games broadcast by ABC and Fox during the regular season. Leave it to an insurance outfit to make sure it’s covered when it comes to rights to the music—it commissioned “Pac Life Fight Song,” working with Hum Music & Sound Design in Santa Monica, and got a copyright in 2009. The snappy ditty will be missed during this year’s bowl games—the network deals didn’t extend into the post-season. Pac Life has you covered if you really miss the music, though—the song is available as a ringtone … A guest at the Island Hotel’s holiday party had just mentioned to GM Gerard Widder that the lamb French Dip at Philippe The Original is one of the few things you simply have to leave OC and head to L.A. to obtain. Then came a plate of Executive Chef David Man’s lamb lollipops to relieve Widder of any need to respond. Now how about some au jus and the hot mustard? … From the OC Elsewhere file: Big moves for Andy Puzder, who used to work for Carl Karcher back when the eponymous burger chain he founded was based in Anaheim, and John Krafcik, former boss of Hyundai Motor America in Fountain Valley. Puzder appears on his way to serve as labor secretary in the Trump administration, while Krafcik recently got word that the self-driving car unit he’s headed as part of Google will become an independent outfit called Waymo under the umbrella of Mountain View-based parent Alphabet … Notable that California Chrome was slated last weekend for a first-ever race at Los Alamitos Race Course, the thoroughbred’s home stable even before he won the 2014 Kentucky Derby. Chrome is headed for stud in Kentucky, while the rumor mill has found grist in any number of visions for an eventual redevelopment of Doc Allred’s 217-acre racecourse … More horse sense: CBRE’s Jeff Moore knows how to do a Western-style night on the town. The senior managing director for the brokerage managed to take in a session of the National Rodeo Finals and a George Strait concert on a recent weekend in Vegas … Sullivan says: The holiday season reminds me to thank the many who have read this column and passed along valuable thoughts—laudatory and critical—over the past year.
