The Susan Samueli Center for Integrative Medicine, part of UC Irvine Health, named Dr. Shaista Malik its director last week.
Malik, a cardiologist, succeeds Dr. John Longhurst.
The Samueli center was established 14 years ago with a $5.7 million donation from Henry and Susan Samueli.
Henry Samueli, cofounder of Irvine-based chipmaker Broadcom Corp., is a member of the OC’s Wealthiest list that is the centerpiece of this issue of the Business Journal (see profile in special section pullout, related stories throughout).
Integrative medicine combines traditional Western medicine with alternative treatments.
Cardiology is an “ideal specialty for this integrative approach because 90% of heart disease is preventable,” Malik said.
She also directs the UC Irvine Health Preventive Cardiology program and was introduced to the Samueli center while completing her fellowship at the UCI School of Medicine.
UC Irvine Health is the University of California-Irvine’s clinical, medical education and research enterprises. It includes UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange.
