The S&P 500 was up 1% to 2.039.66 in midday trading.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 1.3% to 17,587.57, and the Nasdaq was up 0.5% to 4,698.75.
The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond rose 6% to 1.77%.
The price of gold fell 1% to $1,263.
HEALTHCARE
Mission Viejo-based Ensign Group Inc. was up 3.2% to $43.55 and a $979 million market cap. The nursing and home healthcare facility operator said it bought a 100-bed skilled nursing facility in Omaha, Neb.
San Clemente-based CareTrust REIT Inc. was up 4.2% to $14.57 and a $327 million market cap. The independent-living facility owner and operator said it bought a 170-bed skilled nursing facility in Lakewood, Colo. for $18 million.
CareTrust was spun off from former parent Ensign last June.
RETAIL
Huntington Beach-based Quiksilver Inc. was up 8% to $2.16 and a $371 million market cap in a second day of share price increases. The stock is up about 17% in two days.
