Lots of Good On OC To-Do List

What to do if you’re unsettled by the harsh tone and tenor of politics today? Do good—and keep doing it … That simple advice came from former President Bill Clinton, who didn’t engage in any partisan bitterness while addressing the 5th Annual World Patient Safety, Science & Technology Summit in Dana Point on Feb. 4 (see related story, this page). Clinton pointed to the accomplishments of the Patient Safety Movement that Masimo Inc. CEO Joe Kiani started five years ago as an example of how to influence the future by good deed while leaving the harsh words of politics to others … Don’t know if Alicia Keys heard Clinton before she took the stage for Children Hospital of Orange County’s gala fundraiser a few hours later at Monarch Beach Resort, but she gave a variation on the theme. Keys wowed, as usual, and then got wowed herself by a display of philanthropy—“doing for love,” she called it—that helped raise more than $5 million for CHOC … Julia Argyros planned to do quite a bit—and she did even more. First she joined daughters Stephanie and Lisa in making sure the evening included some birthday fun for her husband, the ever-impeccably groomed Ambassador George Argyros, who recently turned 80. Then Julia watched the crowd respond to an appeal for donations to CHOC with such enthusiasm—the same display that wowed Keys—that she tore up her own check for $500,000 and wrote another for $1 million … Peter Keller, president of the Bowers Museum, did a lot for community relations last week when he helped Consul of Mexico Mario Cuevas open De Mar a Mar, an exhibit that brings visual artist Julio Rodriguez’ work to the Mexican Consulate on Fourth Street … Sometimes you gotta do for yourself so you can do for an entire organization. David Pyott told last week’s breakfast program of the Forum for Corporate Directors at the Pacific Club that a regular half-hour morning swim helped keep him frosty during the months he spent fending off the hostile run that hedge funder Bill Ackman and Valeant Pharmaceuticals took at Allergan back in 2014 … Microsemi boss Jim Peterson—who shared the stage with Pyott and Edwards Lifesciences CEO Mike Mussallem for questions from Latham & Watkins’ Cary Hyden—is known as a hard charger who gets deals done. He told the crowd he’s recently taken up meditation, adding that “my team is grateful for it” … Prayer and some publicity from the pulpit were a couple of things the Rev. Kerry Beaulieu and his flock at Our Lady Queen of Angels could do in response to the recent fire that severely damaged Bruno Serato’s Anaheim White House Restaurant (see related item, page 16). The Newport Beach parish wasn’t alone in doing for Serato—a campaign at gofundme.com/anaheimwhitehouse had raised nearly $130,000 at last report … Serato plans to continue to do for others—his philanthropic efforts provide meals for thousands of kids in need on a daily basis—at Christ Cathedral in Garden Grove …The Greater Irvine Chamber of Commerce will do something new as it goes above and beyond the potential of its new name this week with a delegation headed to the U.K. for an “exploratory Foreign Direct Investment” mission … Sullivan says: The Hilton Orange County/Costa Mesa knows how to do California cool.
