CSA Group Puts Lighting Testing Center in Irvine

Toronto-based CSA Group, a provider of testing, inspection, and certification services for manufacturers, has added a new testing center for electric lighting to its product-evaluation laboratory in Irvine.

On Dec. 2, CSA announced the opening of a new Lighting Center of Excellence to its site at 34 Bunsen near the Los Olivos Shopping Center in the Irvine Spectrum.

The CSA laboratory, founded more than 20 years ago, was already testing gas appliances, medical equipment and IT hardware, high-tech items at the Irvine facility. The 38,000 square foot facility in Irvine offers testing, inspecting and certification services to manufacturers in the United States, Canada and across the globe.

Consolidated, Location

The latest addition will address the need for a faster evaluation process for lighting products.

Many North American lighting manufacturers are in California, with either their headquarters or primary manufacturing located here, KC Fletcher, the center’s operations manager, told the Business Journal on Dec. 3.

As supply chain issues continue to pose challenges across the industry, the facility will allow North American manufacturers to send products for comprehensive testing in one location, eliminating the requirement in most cases to ship products to multiple testing sites before they reach the market.

While lights may appear simple, there is a wide array of points to be checked, including being sure nearly ultra-violet lights used for various types of plants don’t hurt human eyes, as well as energy performance, sound emission limits and basic product safety.

Safety Certification

The CSA Group provides expert testing, inspection, and certification services that enable manufacturers to demonstrate that their products are in compliance with applicable safety, environmental, and operating performance standards for markets around the world.

Manufacturers pay CSA Group a fee to test and inspect products to determine if they’re in compliance with standards.

The Irvine facility has 64 people, while the Center of Excellence has a four-person team, according to Fletcher. He relocated to Irvine from Seattle in the middle of last year to run the lighting testing unit.

Streamlined Testing

The new facility will centralize and enhance CSA Group’s lighting evaluation services, directly addressing a need by manufacturers looking for a more streamlined testing, inspection and certification process and faster turnaround times.

“Faced with an increasingly competitive marketplace and ongoing supply chain challenges, North American lighting manufacturers are looking for a testing, inspection and certification provider who not only helps them navigate the certification scheme requirements of products, but who understands their need to get products to market quickly,” says Fletcher.

He added: “Establishing our Lighting Center of Excellence in Southern California, in close proximity to many of our customers, will help us strengthen the customer experience.”

The CSA certification mark appearing on billions of products worldwide. CSA Group has over 30 offices and labs around the world including Canada, U.S., Europe and Asia.

Overall, Fletcher said that the CSA Group is “similar” to Underwriters Laboratories, the Northbrook, Ill.-based product safety and certification organization.
