Corn Dogs and Riesling

Wagyu corn dogs and duck fat fries? Yes please, especially when paired with a German Riesling.

I made sure not to miss the recently county fair staple paired with the classic wine, as well as a Bordeaux with chateaubriand for two, at the “R&B”—Riesling and Bordeaux—tasting at Bourbon Steak restaurant at Monarch Beach Resort in Dana Point. Fellow foodie Della Lisi and I enjoyed all of it, part of a nationwide Clink Different promotion encouraging the dine-out set to try vino from Europe.

“I love Riesling,” Sommelier Michelle Morin confided to us.

As for the Bordeaux, “we are a steak house, so they always pair well.”

And corn dogs?

“Rich and savory,” she said, which “we can balance with the acidity of the Riesling.”

Sides with the chateaubriand included soy glazed mushrooms, and black truffle mac and cheese. For starters we tossed in the shaved zucchini salad with mint, green apples, grapes and Sicilian pistachios.

The meat dishes were one-offs for the event; the wines are always available. Morin can pair any dish for you and has just the impressive wine list to do it.
