Huntington Beach-based Quiksilver Inc. selected a new board of directors to take over after bankruptcy proceedings end, according to documents filed with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. The board will include current Chief Executive Pierre Agnes and three representatives designated by L.A.-based private equity firm Oaktree Capital Management LP: David Tanner, who leads Oaktree’s portfolio enhancement team, Thomas Casarella, a senior vice president of Oaktree’s Global Principal Group, and Matthew Wilson, a managing director and co-portfolio manager of the same group. Agnes has been a member of Quiksilver’s board of directors and served as CEO since March.
EDUCATION
California State University-Fullerton was awarded a $3 million grant from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine to continue its scholar program in stem cell research and regenerative medicine. Up to 10 scholars participate in rigorous coursework in molecular and cell biology and lab training each fall to prepare for a seven-month paid internship conducting stem cell research at partner institutions. CSUF had already received $3 million from the institute for the program, which started in 2010. The latest grant will provide training and research opportunities to 50 more students over the next five years.
Chapman University named Matthew J. Parlow the next dean of its Fowler School of Law, effective July 1. He’ll succeed Tom Campbell, who has served in the role since 2011. Parlow returns to Chapman after serving as associate dean for academic affairs at Marquette University Law School in Milwaukee, Wis., where he taught for the past seven years. He served on the Chapman law faculty from 2005 to 2008.
HEALTHCARE
Irvine-based St. Joseph Health named Kevin Manemann chief executive of its St. Joseph Heritage Healthcare physician practice management organization. He succeeds C.R. Burke, who retired at the end of December. Manemann most recently served as chief operating officer of Heritage’s Southern California region.He’s also in charge of the population health division of Irvine-based St. Joseph Hoag Health, the integrated regional delivery network created by St. Joseph Health and Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian.
Aliso Viejo-based Avanir Pharmaceuticals Inc. said the Food and Drug Administration approved its Onzetra Xsail drug for treating adult acute migraine headache. The drug, its second approved product, is in powdered form and delivered intranasally through the Xsail breath-powered delivery device.
Children’s Hospital of Orange County will expand its neonatal intensive care unit. The Orange pediatric hospital is adding 36 private patient rooms to allow parents and guardians to stay overnight with their critically ill babies who receive specialized care there. CHOC said the expansion will open in the summer of 2017 and replace pod-style beds now in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit. It also launched a $22 million fundraising campaign to complete the project.
SPORTS
The Chargers NFL team submitted plans to the city of Santa Ana for grading of five acres at Susan Street and Lake Center Drive for two football fields and other facilities. The property, owned by C.J. Segerstrom & Sons, would be used for practice and a team headquarters in anticipation of a move from San Diego to Inglewood in L.A. County.
The Orange County Breakers tennis club has a new home at the Newport Beach Tennis Club. Breakers Stadium will host six home matches in the upcoming Mylan World Team Tennis season, which runs from July 31 to Aug. 13. The Breakers, which won the 2004 Mylan WTT championship, called Newport Beach home from 2003 to 2011. It’s coached by Newport Beach resident and former world doubles No. 1 Rick Leach. Former players include Lindsay Davenport, Pete Sampras and Maria Sharapova. Breakers season tickets, which start at $210, go on sale Feb. 3.
OTHER
Matthew Vella, chief executive and director of patent licensor Acacia Research Corp., resigned, effective Dec. 21 of last year, said the company, which began a search for his replacement. Senior Vice President Marvin Key, who’s also chief executive of Acacia Research Group LLC, will serve as interim CEO during the search.
