The state ended talks on a long-term power contract at AES’s Huntington Beach plant

AES Corp. said the state has broken off talks to buy power from two Huntington Beach power units currently undergoing improvements.

The power producer said the California Department of Water Resources ended negotiations last week with AES Huntington Beach LLC on a long-term power contract.

AES Huntington Beach now “is redirecting its marketing effort for the output of two gas-fired units,” the company said in a statement.

The two units are expected to bring 450 megawatts of power online by late summer. The state had sought to streamline permits for the units in exchange for AES keeping the power in California. According to AES, the state has sent letters to the California Energy Commission and the South Coast Air Quality Management District calling for the removal of permit conditions requiring sales to the state.
