Qualcomm Hires Apple Lawyer

Irvine chipmaker Broadcom Corp. has a new legal adversary at rival Qualcomm Inc.

San Diego-based Qualcomm said Friday it hired Apple Inc. alum Donald Rosenberg as its new general counsel.

Rosenberg is charged with all legal matters and the company’s legal strategy.

He is replacing Qualcomm’s prior general counsel, Lou Lupin, who stepped down in August after bungling Qualcomm’s patent battles with Nokia Corp. and Broadcom.

Legal battles with Broadcom, which Qualcomm has lost for the most part, have stretched back more than two years.

Apple also announced Friday that Rosenberg’s spot was taken by former Oracle Corp. executive Daniel Cooperman.

Rosenberg spent just 10 months at Apple.

He was hired to replace Nancy Heinen, who’s embroiled in a federal investigation into her role in the backdating of stock options there.

Before his stint at Apple, Rosenberg spent more than 30 years at IBM Corp.’s legal department.
