Qualcomm Files 3rd Broadcom Suit

San Diego-based Qualcomm Inc. has filed another patent infringement case against Broadcom Corp.

Qualcomm, which licenses chip and software for wireless phones, accuses Irvine-based Broadcom, a communications chipmaker, of patent infringement for its wireless chips, according to the latest suit in federal court in San Diego.

Broadcom is alleged to have infringed on a patent covering Qualcomm’s WCDMA platform technology, which is widely used in the wireless industry, according to the suit.

The suit also charges Broadcom with violating patents for wireless local access networks products and accuses Broadcom of stealing trade secrets.

This is Qualcomm’s third patent suit against Broadcom.

Broadcom has filed its own complaints against Qualcomm for violating several patents.

Broadcom also is one of six companies that filed an antitrust suit in Europe against Qualcomm last fall.

The companies are asking the European Union to investigate and stop “Qualcomm’s anticompetitive conduct” in charging excessive patent fees for third-generation wireless technology.
