St. Joseph Hospital Foundation of Orange hosted a benefit dinner at the Anaheim Hilton & Towers that raised $130,000 for the St. Joseph Hospital Heart Center. The event included a cocktail reception, book signing with KNBC-TV’s Christopher Nance, dinner, live entertainment by Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers, and dancing.

The Donald Bren Foundation of Newport Beach awarded the California Institute of Technology a $10 million grant to establish named professorships to support Caltech’s Biological Sciences Initiative. The Bren Professors Endowment will provide support for scholarly activities in biology and related disciplines. This gift brings the biological sciences initiative total to over $80 million.

Volunteer positions are available for the sixth annual Toshiba Senior Classic, which will be held February 28-March 5 at the Newport Beach Country Club. All of the 14 volunteer committees still have openings. A 1,200-person volunteer force mobilizes the tournament, and all net proceeds are donated to charity. The Walt Disney Company Foundation awarded the Orange County Rescue Mission a $125,000 grant. The funds will be used to support the Rescue Mission’s Operation Hope, an outreach program designed to transform the lives of impoverished children and their families who currently reside in low-income, drug- and gang-infested motels located throughout Orange County.

The Health Care Council of Orange County received a $20,000 grant from the Irvine Health Foundation to promote access to healthcare through research, coalition-building, education and advocacy.

The Huntington Harbour Cruise of Lights donated proceeds from its Christmas dinner cruises to the Philharmonic Society of Orange County’s Youth Music Programs.

Special Olympics Southern California held its second annual John R. Wooden Classic golf tournament and benefit dinner at Pelican Hill Golf Club and the Four Seasons Hotel in Newport Beach. Proceeds from the event were donated to a program of year-round sports training and competition for children and adults with mental retardation.

The Steelcase Foundation awarded the Huntington Beach Community Clinic $10,000 for a program in collaboration with the Ocean View School District through which four middle schools will have an on-site counselor to work with administrators and faculty in averting negative behavior by students.

The Glen and Dorothy Stillwell Charitable Foundation awarded $7,000 to the Huntington Beach Community Clinic for its in-house medical dispensary. The funds will provide for medications for qualified chronically ill children and adults.

The Orange County Red Cross received a donation in the amount of $25,000 from PacifiCare. The gift will help support disaster relief programs, disaster preparedness education, life-saving health and safety education, water safety and youth services.
