DGWB Advertising, Irvine, FCB Southern California, Irvine, Casanova Pendrill Publicidad, Irvine, Lawrence Mayo & Ponder, Newport Beach, Alcone Marketing, Irvine, and Side Show Advertising, were just some of the top winners at the Western regional American Advertising Awards contest last month.
DGWB won three Addys in the broadcast category for its client Ugly Duckling and two Addys for its print campaign for Wienerschnitzel. Meanwhile, its Adelante/DGWB division won three in the non-English category for its work on Ugly Duckling.
FCB Southern California won two Addys for its work for the Newport Beach International Film Festival, and McElroy:FCB won an Addy for a print campaign entitled “Holiday Manifesto” for surfwear client Volcom, Costa Mesa.
Side Show Advertising won an Addy for its campaign, “Holiday Bash for the Self-Employed.”
Casanova Pendrill Publicidad won for its work for the American Hispanic Advertising Association.
Lawrence, Mayo & Ponder won an Addy for its work for Pure Intensity Clothing. Alcone Marketing’s Luis Camano won an Addy for the “Root Canal” campaign for Jose Cuervo. Also, Eric Spiegle of FCB in Costa Mesa, won an Addy for his “Designer Imposters” entry form created for last year’s Orange County Ad Club Call for Entries.
Ed Crayton and Justin Hooper won an Addy for their creative team work on “Miserable Hacks” for the Orange County Ad Club Scholarship Fund.
The regional winners go on to compete in the national American Advertising Awards on June 20 in Las Vegas, said Denise Denison Erkeneff, OC Ad Club past president.
On the Other Side of the Fence …

Depending on which of these two newspapers you read it in, the big winner at Sunday’s Orange County Press Club Awards is either in Costa Mesa or Santa Ana.
This year, the press club received 634 entries, up 23% from last year’s contest.
The Times OC staff won a total of 36 awards, including 10 firsts, 17 seconds and nine bronzes; the Register staff won 29 awards, including 13 firsts, five silvers and 11 bronzes.
The Daily Pilot won two awards, a first place and a second place.
The OC Weekly swept the weeklies categories, winning 21 awards,including seven firsts, eight seconds and six thirds,clobbering the OC Metro, which won a single second-place award.
And once again, the Orange County Business Journal staff didn’t enter.
Bates Names Media Director
Bates USA West has hired Initiative Media’s Janet Bescoby as its new senior vice president and media director to oversee planning, development and implementation of media buys for the agency’s clients. Bescoby’s main assignment will be directing Bates’ No. 1 client, Hyundai Motor America, and Hyundai Dealer Association media business throughout the United States.
At IM, Bescoby handled media planning for all the company’s Disney business, including Disneyland, Disney Channel, Buena Vista (Home Entertainment and Television), Disney Licensing and Disney Regional Entertainment.
Madison Marquette Hires Gladstone
Irvine-based Gladstone International will handle PR for all West Coast projects from Seattle to San Diego that are managed by Madison Marquette Realty Services, including the Fairplex Village in Pomona; Macy’s Westwood in Westwood; and Bay Street in Emeryville. Cincinnati, Ohio-based Madison Marquette is a retail real estate developer that specializes in new and redevelopment projects, with its local offices in Beverly Hills.
J. Rice Adds Tech Firm
Santa Ana-based J. Rice Communications has picked up a new PR account: Again Technologies of San Mateo. The agency, which specializes in business to business marketing communications, will design a marketing campaign for the company’s trade shows and Internet conferences. The business is estimated at about $1 million annually.
PR Stunt of the Week:
The Business Journal has learned that Barbara Caruso, principal of Caruso Communications in Huntington Beach, has adopted a new nickname since she invented a PR stunt for her client Del Taco: the burrito lady.
Caruso came up with the idea to build a 10-foot long “Macho Burrito” to get publicity at new store openings in Tuscon, San Diego, Palm Dessert and Sacramento that brought out the TV cameras in some of these smaller markets. Although “Burrito Babs,” as we will affectionately call her, didn’t expect such great coverage, she says she’s glad that her client is benefiting.

Nation’s Restaurant News named Newport Beach-based Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar one of eight restaurant chains it deemed the year’s hottest concepts International event and communications agency, Arlington, Va.-based PGI has hired Margie Mills as a new account executive covering Orange County Irvine-based Prandium Inc. has narrowed its search for a new ad shop for its Koo Koo Roo chicken chain; however, company officials declined to disclose what shops are participating in the review. Plans are to announce an agency of record in May.
