Oakley Lends Celebs Some ‘OC Cool’

Tom Cruise will be wearing Oakley’s Romeo shades (price: $250) in the upcoming “Mission Impossible II.” Oakley’s Tens model (retails for $85) made it to the cover of Fortune’s April 3 issue, worn by Ford Chairman Bill Ford under the headline “Motown Cool.” Best-actor Kevin Spacey also was seen wearing Oakleys at the Oscars. “The cool thing is we don’t pay them to wear our glasses,” says Lance Allega, director of corporate communications … ABC News anchor Peter Jennings at an April 10 speech at an OC Business Council event, drew a round of laughter from the 800 in attendance when he said, “In my office, I’m thought of as a conservative. I don’t doubt that you think I’m a liberal.” That may be, but attendance was 150 better than for George Will last year and 200 better than for Steve Forbes in ’98 … The annual NAIOP “Night at the Fights” at the Hyatt Regency Irvine is, besides being a smoky and boozy affair, one of Orange County’s best economic indicators. The event drew 400 in 1991, reached 600 in 1995 and has been a sellout (900-plus) for the past three years, with the waiting list growing longer each time. This year’s May 11 event has been sold out for three weeks. Whether that outweighs last week’s Nasdaq performance, only time will tell Roger Johnson, former Western Digital chief and a Friend of Bill (Clinton), is leaving after about a year and half as CEO of the Dallas-based Young President’s Organization, the global membership group for CEOs. Johnson said his job was to turn things around and recruit a replacement, which he has, Thomas Stauffer. Johnson, who recently hosted Hillary Clinton at his Laguna Beach home, says he’s busy locally with investments and board commitments; looking forward to doing more teaching at UCI, where he has endowed the chair that’s occupied by prof Mark Baldassare, and “happy to be back off the weekly airplane” routine Separated at birth: Minnesota Guv Jesse Ventura and Irvine Councilman Dave Christensen. The councilman says he’s not copying the popular governor’s style, but since Christensen’s hair was thinning anyway, he thought it best to get rid of the whole do … When OC Supe Todd Spitzer is not busy fighting the airport at El Toro, he’s busy fighting bad guys in Los Angeles. The LAPD named Spitzer its Reserve Officer of the Year for the Hollenbeck Division and for its Central Bureau. Spitzer’s specialty is DUI enforcement.
