Privatizing War
Thank you for questioning the wisdom of using large numbers of private contractors as part of our military campaign in Iraq (May 10 “The Private War” Commentary).
You’ve hit upon a vitally important subject that has implications in our military affairs as well as civil government at various levels throughout the nation.
Efficiency is desired when spending public money, to be sure, and I have no problem finding the best-suited private contractor to haul garbage under contract to a municipality or other government entity.
Fighting a war overseas or crime at home is another matter altogether. So is the ownership of certain natural or man-made assets or infrastructure that are crucial to society as a whole.
I suspect your initial question will be followed upon in your own pages and, eventually, by other media.
Fine work on putting the matter up for debate.

Great Park
Irvine Mayor Agran might take issue with Assemblyman Campbell’s proposal to move the OC Fair to the “Great Park.” The mayor is so fond of talking about the parks within a park, where would his precious “Business Park,” “Funeral Park,” “Industrial Park,” “Residential Park” and “Amusement Park” go?

Morton’s Locale
Fifi Chao may know her steaks from her chickens, but she needs to brush up on her geography. Her May 10 Executive Dining review of Morton’s Steakhouse in South Coast Plaza reports its location at 1641 Sunflower Ave., Costa Mesa. It is actually in Santa Ana, as are Darya’s, Antonello’s and Blue Water Grill restaurants.

Santa Ana Planning Commissioner
Editor’s note: Our mistake. While most of South Coast Plaza is in Costa Mesa, the restaurants clustered on the other side of Sunflower Avenue are in Santa Ana.
