Iraq

It’s probably inappropriate for you to smugly say “I told you so,” but your opposition to the Iraq war last year that seemed heretical at the time turned out to be quite prescient. As you pointed out, the question was never whether we would beat Saddam but rather, what would follow. The mess that has developed, and its skillful manipulation by the liberal media, unfortunately may bring us something worse than President Saddam in Iraq: President Kerry in the U.S.

Re Barbara Hiller Johnson’s May 3 letter, I wonder:

In addition to mourning American lives, does her heart also bleed for the thousands upon thousands of Iraqis who also have lost their lives?

Whether we should have gone into Iraq or not is now a moot point. We’re there. But what is truly troubling is the lack of reconstruction planning and cultural and political understanding displayed by this administration.

One serious misstep has followed another and we’ve gone from being viewed primarily as liberators to occupiers to subjugators and torturers. The Iraq experiment is just that, an experiment in which the Bush administration has shown a callous disregard for its subjects.

There is still hope for a successful conclusion to the Iraq experiment, but I hold very little hope that this administration is capable of getting us to that point.

The prison abuse scandal has been exposed, there are numerous ongoing investigations and there is every reason to believe new procedures will be put in place to prevent any further violations.

With that in mind, what good can come from continually showing pictures of the prison abuse and interviewing Democrat critics of our military and administration? Could it be that the media are more interested in their ratings and profit lines than the safety of our troops? Are Democrats so obsessed with their personal political agenda that they are blinded to the danger they are creating for our soldiers?
