The Election

It would be difficult to characterize the presidential election and the federal Congressional election as anything other than a Republican sweep.

Republicans won the White House and expanded majorities in the Congress for the first time since Woodrow Wilson.

The expanded Senate majority for Republicans increases the likelihood that issues that had passed the House and stalled in the Senate will see new life, including the president’s energy bill and comprehensive legal reform.

Of importance to Southern California’s defense technology, telecommunications and biotech industries, President Bush’s victory likely means continued emphasis on defense spending and Homeland Security.

The growing intersection between the commercial and military technology interests will continue.

There are other technology issues, like expanding broadband availability and expensing stock options, which do not break on party lines.

But on “bread-and-butter” business issues, the technology industry is likely to see a Washington political environment more committed to a pro-business agenda.

United Way

The Orange County Department of Education is proud to support the Orange County United Way in its effort to address some of the most critical human care issues in our community.

In this day of shrinking government budgets for health and human services, it is more important than ever that local organizations and employees do their part.

The various divisions at the OCDE are competing to see which can generate the most participation in our United Way campaign. I hope other companies will consider a friendly competition to increase employee giving.
