Biolase Technology Inc., an Irvine dental device maker, said Tuesday that it is finishing up a 20% cut of its U.S. workforce in order to save money.
Biolase, which makes lasers used in dental procedures, said it has cut its quarterly costs by $2 million. The company said it’s also reviewing cost-saving measures at its international subsidiaries.
Biolase has 216 workers.
Biolase’s cuts will create a “leaner organization” that’s better equipped to absorb the weak economy and slowing demand for capital equipment, said Jake St. Philip, the company’s chief executive, in a statement.
The device maker said that its research and development costs would remain relatively intact and that it plans to continue investing in product development.
