Ingram Micro Leads OC’s Fortune 500

Ingram Micro Leads OC’s Fortune 500

Santa Ana-based Ingram Micro Inc. held on to its title as Orange County’s highest-ranking Fortune 500 company, despite a big drop in revenue and a slip in its ranking.

The technology distributor ranked No. 75 on the list with 2001 revenue of $25 billion, down 18% from 2000. A year ago, Ingram ranked No. 49 on the list.

But Ingram held on to its lead among OC companies by a wide margin. The next OC company on the list is Santa Ana-based PacifiCare Health Systems Inc. at No. 169 with $11.8 billion in 2001 sales. The health services provider’s ranking was unchanged.

At No. 214 is Aliso Viejo-based Fluor Corp., with 2001 sales of $8.9 billion. Last year, the engineering and construction company ranked No. 175 and dropped after spinning off Massey Energy Co. early last year.

Debuting on the list are OC’s two title companies: No. 426 Irvine-based Fidelity National Financial Inc. and cross-county rival First American Corp. of Santa Ana at No. 437.

Fidelity ranked No. 547 on last year’s Fortune 1000 list and got a boost from its 2000 buy of Chicago Title Corp. Fidelity counted 2001 revenue of $3.87 billion, just ahead of First American’s $3.75 billion. First American ranked No. 526 last year and moved up with a 28% gain in revenue.

Rounding out the OC group is No. 439 Pacific LifeCorp, a unit of Newport Beach-based Pacific Life Insurance Co., which is privately owned by policy holders. Fortune includes Pacific LifeCorp because it reports financials. Last year, the magazine ranked Pacific Life Insurance at No. 354 with $4.8 billion in 2000 revenue.

Falling off the list was Bergen Brunswig Corp., last year’s No. 103. The drug distributor formerly based in Orange was bought late last year by AmeriSource Health Corp. The combined company, Valley Forge, Pa.-based AmerisourceBergen Corp., ranked No. 127 with $15.8 billion in 2001 revenue.

The 2002 Fortune 500 appears in the April 15 issue of the magazine.
