Kohl’s Corp. donated $1 million to Child-ren’s Hospital of Orange County at this year’s Air Power Games. The games provided 75 children who have asthma the opportunity to compete in a variety of track and field events.
NFL players and coaches helped United Way-Orange County raise $160,000 at its Hyatt Regency Irvine mixer with the real estate and building industry in support of local children’s programs. The programs are tailored to help kids meet basic needs and encourage education. Former St. Louis Rams coach John Robinson was the keynote speaker.
The Tinkerbell Guild raised $150,000 for CHOC at its annual gala. The event fundraiser had a “le cirque” theme. Proceeds benefit the oncology exam room and the oncology playroom at the hospital’s new tower.
Vocational Visions’ raised $100,000 at its roaring ’20s-themed gala. Proceeds from the event fund the nonprofit’s programs, which serve men and women with developmental disabilities in South County.
Bank of America Corp. donated $30,000 to Second Harvest Food Bank. Bank of America regularly works with the food bank’s national af-filiate, Feeding America, recently donating $1 mil-lion for emergency food needs across the country.
Orange High School raised $27,100 for Leu-kemia & Lymphoma Society’s school and youth programs. Students raised funds through a school carnival, dodgeball tournament, talent show and by soliciting donations from the
local community.
Nonprofit Irvine Housing Opportunities Inc. gave $15,000 to Families Forward and another $15,000 to the Orange County Community Foundation.
The Building Block Foundation raised $25,000 at its Against All Odds event and made separate grants of $25,000 each to several other local nonprofits. Former Major League Baseball pitcher Jim Abbott addressed attendees on a theme of accountability.
Brea Olinda High School received a $20,000 award from Virginia-based security company ASIS International Inc. The high school submitted a winning entry for ASIS’ school security funding competition. The money will be used for school improvements on the campus.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County received $17,500 from Real Estate Disposition LLC, a real estate auction company based in Irvine. The money was generated from the auction of five guitars autographed by members of rock band Kansas.
MemorialCare Medical Centers donated $10,000 in underwriting costs and the Center for Cancer Disparities Research at California State University, Fullerton, donated $5,000 for the Komen Breast Health Symposium. The Orange County Asian and Pacific Islander Community Alliance contributed $2,500.
The Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach received $15,000 from the Hearts of Montage, the charity arm of Montage Laguna Beach, to support a new performing arts program.
Volunteers from the Beckstrand Cancer Foundation raised $10,000 for the individual patient assistance program by participating in various races at the OC Marathon. The program helps newly diagnosed cancer patients meet basic needs.
The city of Costa Mesa received a $5,000 grant from State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co. The donation was made to the Costa Mesa Fire Department and will be used to purchase high-visibility vests.
Minneapolis-based UnitedHealth Group Inc. gave two $500 grants to local nonprofits YMCA of Orange County and Santiago Creek School in Santa Ana.
The Heart Truth Road Show gave free heart health screenings to women during its stop at the Brea Mall. The show also featured its red dress collection with dresses worn by celebrities Hilary Duff, Katie Couric and Vivica Fox and a red dress charm designed by model Heidi Klum. The Road Show is a program of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and Diet Coke, part of Coca-Cola Co.
