Irvine-based Toyota Material Handling USA Inc. donated 20,000 trees to the Arbor Day Foun-dation. Toyota made good on its promise to donate a tree for every 8-Series lift truck sold in 2007. Trees will be planted in fire-damaged national forests. Toyota employees re-cently joined with OC Boy Scouts to plant 100 additional trees near the Oso Lake Reservoir in Rancho Santa Margarita.
Daniel J. McClory pledged $1 million to the track and field and cross-country teams at Eastern Michigan University. McClory is managing director for Hunter Wise Financial Group in Irvine. McClory was a three-time captain and four-year letter winner for both teams at EMU. His donation is the largest gift ever received by the EMU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
Anaheim Ducks helped raise $120,000 for Children’s Hospital of OC at the 2008 Anaheim Ducks Wives and Significant Others Fashion Luncheon. Event proceeds will fund a new teen room on the oncology floor at the hospital. Some 250 guests attended the event, including players, coaches and the club’s executive management team.
Glenn and Mindy Stearns hosted an underwriting party for the annual Canyon Acres Blue Ribbon Gala, raising $125,000. More than 50 guests sipped wine and sampled hors d’ oeuvres while listening to plans for the gala. Some major sponsors of the event are Gemini Industries Inc., Troy Group Inc. and Yard House Restaurants LLC.
Irvine-based Snyder Langston donated $70,000 to City of Hope, Midnight Mission, Human Options, Habitat for Humanity and the YMCA of OC. The company’s employees gave an additional $25,000 to various charities. Snyder Langston has a bridge program that matches employee community service with a monetary donation.
Boeing Co.’s Boeing Employees Community Fund gave the Tustin Public Schools Foundation $50,000 and a Crystal Vision Award for Excellence in Environmental Education. The grant will launch the Go Green Initiative to help schools reduce waste and educate students about conservation. Three pilot schools will launch the program.
Opus West Corp. donated $25,000 to support Big Brothers Big Sisters of OC school-based mentoring programs. The programs match high school volunteers with younger children for tutoring, games and relationship-building activities. The donation will also benefit the Tutor Pal program. Additionally, Rosemount Analytical Inc. gave $8,000 for the nonprofit’s Bright Futures program. The program offers female empowerment, self-defense and CPR classes.
The Wyland Foundation donated $10,000 to Laguna College of Art & Design to fund Fine Arts Scholarships. Eligible students must be Fine Arts or Illustration majors. The Peter and Masha Plotkin Memorial Foundation also gave out five scholarships totaling $2,500 to the college. Recipients were Shane Daley, Hannah Harris, Jason Kowalski, Jared Linge and Erin Metzdorf.
The Argyros Foundation gave $10,000 to the Blind Children’s Learning Center in Santa Ana. The center offers a comprehensive program for blind and visually impaired children from birth until 21 years. The funds will specifically go to the center’s on-site pre-kindergarten classroom.
The Child Abuse Prevention Center in Orange received $2,500 from the Million Dollar Round Table for its Adopt-a-Family program. Reggie Bennet secured the grant. Bennett has supported the Prevention Center for four years and is a member of the Million Dollar Round Table.
The First Page bookstore donated new children’s books valued at $1,870 to the Donna and John Crean Mariners Branch Library in Newport Beach. The First Page allows customers to direct 5% of purchases to be donated to a school library of their choice. Mariner’s Elementary shares the Mariners Branch joint-use library facility.
Tustin-based HMWC CPAs & Business Advisors donated $500 to the American Red Cross, $500 to the OC Rescue Mission and $500 to Orangewood Children’s Foundation. HMWC offers consulting and tax services to real estate, contractors and healthcare industries.
The Newport Beach Association of Realtors gave $1,000 to a Marine Corps Memorial. The memorial will be dedicated to the courage and valor of the city’s adopted group of Marines.
