Fluor Moving on Seattle Monorail

A 14-mile monorail set to connect downtown Seattle to the suburbs is a step closer.

Late last week Aliso Viejo engineering services provider Fluor Corp. said that Cascadia Monorail Co. had wrapped up negotiations with the government-backed Seattle Monorail Project to build the project.

The Fluor-led Cascadia Monorail venture was tapped to design, build, operate and maintain the monorail that would connect the Seattle Center, Key Arena, Qwest Field, Safeco Field, Pike Place Market, Pioneer Square, downtown retail center, Chinatown and neighborhoods in Ballard, Interbay, Queen Anne, Belltown, West Seattle and other suburbs.

The Seattle Monorail Project is expected to give more details, including the expected cost, on June 20. Design and construction of the long-contested project is slated for completion December 2010.

Cascadia Monorail includes more than 20 construction companies, including Hitachi, Mitsui, Alcatel and HDR Engineering.
