Federal regulators have issued a recall for an Advanced Medical Optics Inc. chemical used in eye surgery because of swelling and other health problems.
The move by the Food and Drug Administration comes after Santa Ana-based Advanced Medical issued its own recall of the chemical in October, according to an Associated Press report.
Regulators did their own recall after Advanced Medical recovered only 964 of the 1,450 units that were distributed to eye surgeons.
The chemical, Healon D, is shipped in a syringe and is used in cornea transplants, cataract removal and other eye surgeries.
The FDA issued its recall saying the chemical could “cause serious health problems,” according to the AP.
Advanced Medical has received 66 reports of negative reactions to Healon D, including eye swelling, the report said.
The recall didn’t seem to faze Wall Street, where Advanced Medical’s shares were up about 5% near the close of trading Monday on a market value of $425 million.
Advanced Medical, which makes eye surgery devices and contact lens solutions, saw two bigger recalls of solutions in 2006 and 2007.
