Back from a vacation in New York City with the following thoughts and observations:
n Having an umbrella in New York is a good idea, even on those odd days when it isn’t raining. A closed umbrella provides great defense in crowds, lines, escalators and elevators.
n All clothes are in style as long as they are black. The shoe style is square toes with two-inch heels, and that’s for the men.
n At the Katz Deli I told the waitress I’d like what Meg Ryan had in “When Harry Met Sally.” Without flinching, she brought me a corned beef sandwich and fries!
n At Ellis Island we saw an exhibit on how the U.S. Public Health Service physicians had six seconds to visually inspect each new immigrant. Shows that managed care has been around longer than you think.
n I tipped the doorman $1 each time he hailed a cab. I realized at week’s end that I’d given him $50. Next time, Mimi is taking her own whistle.
n Tales circulate of the first meetings between Silicon Valley VCers and “Silicon Alley” entrepreneurs where the VCers dressed “up” and the New Yorkers dressed “down” to please the other. Today you rarely see a suit and tie on Wall Street. And to think that “cas day” started in Orange County!
