Harpoon Henry’s, an upscale waterfront restaurant serving seafood and California beach cuisine at Dana Point Harbor, announced this week it is permanently laying off 159 people.
The layoffs were announced as part of Harpoon Henry’s WARN, or Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, letter filed with the state of California on June 4. The layoffs will take effect by Aug. 10.
Harpoon Henry’s first opened its doors at 34555 Golden Lantern in Dana Point in 1975 but announced last year it planned to permanently close due to the massive Dana Point Harbor renovation project.
The restaurant’s owner planned to shut Harpoon Henry’s down in January, according to news reports. The closure, however, was delayed and is now planned to occur by Aug. 10, when the layoffs take effect.
Harpoon Henry’s is owned by Wind & Sea Restaurants Inc.
The third phase of the renovation is slated to begin in August, and the harbor is projected to be fully updated by the winter of 2027.
“This next phase will feature seven architecturally distinctive buildings totaling nearly 100,000 square feet, with expansive patios, indoor-outdoor venues, views over the breakwater, communal outdoor spaces, public art, and multiple programmable parkscapes equipped for live music, markets, and events,” a spokesperson for the harbor revitalization told the Business Journal.
