Newport Beach chipmaker Conexant Systems Inc. plans to invest $250 million in India in the next five years as part of its ongoing expansion there.
The spending is set to go toward hiring, research and development facilities and equipment. Conexant employs 775 people in India, up by 575 people from a year ago.
“Over the past year we have made outstanding progress implementing a strategy in India designed to leverage lower-cost engineering resources to increase product development capacity and extend our competitive advantage,” Dwight Decker, Conexant’s chief executive, said in a statement. “We now plan to expand our commitment to the region as we continue to build a foundation for future revenue growth.”
Conexant could count 1,200 Indian workers by the end of this year, Decker said. It counts about 2,400 workers in all.
The company has had operations in India 1996 with design facilities in Hyderabad, Noida, Bangalore and Pune.
Expanding in India was a key driver in Conexant’s return to profitability last year. The company makes communications chips.
