Comarco Nabs Call Box Pact

Irvine-based Comarco Inc. landed contracts worth $4.3 million to upgrade road-side call boxes in Southern California, the company said Tuesday.

The maker of wireless network testing gear and mobile power adapters is set to transform 2,500 analog call box systems to digital wireless technology in Orange, Riverside and Santa Barbara counties.

Comarco also will add TTY (text telephone) systems for the deaf to about 340 call boxes.

With this contract, which is expected to be completed next summer, Comarco has won a total of about $11 million in awards from government agencies during the past nine months.

Company shares were up 2.3% on Tuesday.

The new contract announcement follows a first quarter loss that widened 30% to $1.6 million in the period ended April 30, versus a year earlier. Sales were 12% lower to $8 million in the period.

The only unit to see sales growth was call boxes, rising 52% to $2.4 million in the period.
