Closure of Brea Hospital Put Off

Embattled Brea Community Hospital lives another day.

U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge John Ryan put a hearing to close the troubled hospital into recess Friday afternoon.

A court-appointed trustee recommended closing the hospital because it couldn’t pay its workers. Brea Community has $13 million in debt and has less than $10,000 in cash.

Closure still could be imminent for the hospital. Ryan plans to resume proceedings next week.

The judge has to consider two bids for the struggling hospital. One is from a group of doctors and investors managed by Newport Beach-based Sovereign Healthcare.

The other, more recent offer is from Prime Healthcare Systems LLC, a Riverside County company that’s offered an infusion of money to keep the troubled hospital open.
