Children’s Hospital of Orange County is opening a freestanding, full-service pediatric clinic at the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Ana this month. The clinic is a first for a Boys & Girls Club in the United States, according to club officials.
CHOC’s clinic will take its first patients Oct. 26 and be open three days a week, said Kathy Kolodghe, the Orange-based hospital’s executive director of ambulatory care. Kolodghe said the clinic expects to see 25 to 30 pediatric patients a day.
The 1,400-square-foot facility will offer physical examinations, preventive healthcare, immunizations, and vision and hearing screenings. Pediatrician Dr. Mark Colon is the clinic’s primary practitioner, assisted by a registered nurse and medical assistant. There are also plans to sign up families for a healthcare assistance program.
CHOC said it is opening the clinic because there’s need to provide pediatric care to children who don’t have private insurance or support from government health programs. Officials cited statistics showing that the median family income in the two U.S. Census tracts near the West Highland Street club is $12,000.
