The Costa Mesa-based Digital Home and Personal Systems division of Canon U.S.A. Inc. is getting ready to roll out the first ink-jet printer that can connect directly to a digital camera to print photographic images.
The S820D printer allows direct printing from Canon’s PowerShot S30 and S40 digital cameras with a dedicated USB cable, without having to run the images through a computer. S820D is set to hit the market in the spring.
The six-color printer also can connect to a PC or Mac via a traditional USB cable. Its memory card slot will accept the digital film of any brand of digital camera for photo printing.
The new printer “is more for consumers who want things simple,” said Ned Bunnell, director of product management of Canon. “They just want pictures at a birthday party and automatically print out images without going through PC.”
The retail price for the S820D will be $399, including the dedicated USB cable and PCMCIA Type II CF adapter. The optional LCD control panel that selects media type, layout, quality, and print date will be $99.
