The parent organization of the Orange County Register has named Carlos Aviles editor of its three Spanish-language weekly newspapers and associated digital media—Excélsior in Santa Ana, La Prensa in Riverside, and ImpactoUSA in Torrance.
Aviles joins Southern California News Group after a stint as editor at La Opinión, a Spanish-language daily newspaper published by ImpreMedia LLC in Los Angeles. He was also a founding editor of Patch Latino, a bilingual news site serving Baldwin Park, South Gate and Lynwood.
“Carlos brings invaluable experience in producing multi-platform journalism that matters to Latinos living and working in Southern California,” according to Frank Pine, executive editor of Southern California News Group, which includes the Register and 10 other daily newspapers and various other publications throughout Southern California. “We will lean on his leadership to enhance storytelling and deliver a richer digital experience for a local Latino population that’s growing in size and influence.”
ImpactoUSA, La Prensa and Excélsior have a combined print circulation of 400,000, according to the group. Excélsior and La Prensa are distributed via news racks and retail locations; ImpactoUSA is delivered on Saturdays to some 250,000 Latino-majority households.
Aviles replaces Sandra Baltazar Martínez, who joined University of California-Riverside’s internal communications department.
