OC Health Nonprofits Share $1.5M in Komen Funding

The Orange County chapter of Susan G. Komen for the Cure awarded $1.5 million in grants to 15 local nonprofits that work to promote breast cancer awareness.

Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa kicked off the holiday season by netting nearly $1.3 million at its annual Candlelight Concert.

The funds raised will support the center’s artistic and education programs.

About 450 people attended the dinner and show at Segerstrom Hall, which was transformed into a ballroom.

The concert featured two performances by Broadway and TV actress Kristin Chenoweth, who sang several songs, and Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons.

Sonora Elementary School Eagles Advanced Band and the Brethren Lutheran School Jazz Combo provided entertainment during the reception.

Joachim Splichal, chef and founder of the Los Angeles-based Patina Restaurant Group, created the four-course menu, along with Gregg Wiele, executive chef of Patina, and Ross Pangilinan, executive chef of Leatherby’s Cafe Rouge, located at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts.

Santa Ana-based United Cerebral Palsy of Orange County raised $130,000 at its Life Without Limits Golf Tournament.

More than 130 golfers and supporters of the charity participated in the tournament at the Santa Ana Country Club.

Tournament chairman Scott Pievac, chief executive of Chino-based SPC Retail Display Group, combined his Brianna Cup golf fundraiser with the United Cerebral Palsy tournament three years ago in honor of his 12-year-old daughter. SPC was a major sponsor.

Some of the prizes given away in a drawing included a Superformance Cobra, donated by Lance Stander and Irvine-based Hillbank Motor Corp., Irvine-based Superformance LLC and Irvine-based Shelby Distribution USA. Other tournament sponsors included Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP, 1st Enterprise Bank and Sidley Austin LLP, all headquartered in Los Angeles; Bryan and Mary Ann Bentrott; Irvine-based The John Harvey Co. About 70 golfers hit the greens at the Aliso Viejo Country Club. Among them were Aliso Viejo Community Association board members Ross Chun and Katie Koster; Professional Community Management of California’s Chief Executive Donny Disbro; General Manager Marilyn Smith; and Marketing Vice President Joe Winkler.

Steve Bilt, chief executive, is leading a team of executives and dentists on an eight-day trip to the capital of AsunciĂłn under the auspices of the Smiles for Everyone Foundation.

One of the main goals for Smile Brands is to develop a model for providing exceptional dental and hygiene care to isolated and low-income communities, according to Bilt.
