Chipotle Continues to Ramp Digital Efforts

Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. (NYSE: CMG) continues to boost its digital business with some tweaks on the ordering front.

Digital is a big business for the Newport Beach-based company, coming in at $1 billion last year. That was up about 90% in 2019.

Chipotle, which had a recent market cap of $29 billion, said its app has expanded to Canada, allowing customers there to order from either the app, website, DoorDash or Uber Eats.

The company is also introducing the Pepper chatbot through Facebook Messenger, which enable ordering and customization of menu items, selection of a nearby local restaurant and payment.

The company’s Digital Kitchen team, a second line in restaurants created specifically to service mobile orders, would then fulfill the orders through the Facebook chatbot.

The new feature is expected to launch June 22.

Elsewhere, Chipotle said it also added a group ordering feature on its website, which would allow people in a group to order simultaneously once a group order link is shared.

Shares of Chipotle rose less than 1% today to $1,039.71; they have more than doubled since March.
