McGraw-Hill Acquires UCI Spinoff

An education software maker spun out of the University of California, Irvine, has been acquired by McGraw-Hill Education in New York.

Irvine-based Aleks Corp.—which was founded in the mid-1990s by UC Irvine scientists, mathematicians, and software engineers—specializes in what’s called adaptive learning, an increasingly popular method that uses technology to help educators provide custom learning experiences.

Terms of the deal, expected to close by October, were not disclosed.

Aleks makes online software that analyzes a student’s aptitude in any given course and then instructs the student on those subjects he or she is most prepared to learn.

Software is offered for math, science and business courses and can be tailored for students of any age.
