BlackBerry Cylance Exec to Parent Security Post

BlackBerry Cylance Vice President John McClurg has been promoted to chief information security officer at parent company BlackBerry Ltd.

McClurg, who previously worked for the FBI and the CIA, will report directly to BlackBerry CEO John Chen and the appointment takes effect on Oct. 26, the Waterloo, Ontario-based company said in a statement today.

In the new role, McClurg will lead “all aspects of BlackBerry’s information security program globally, ensuring the development and implementation of cybersecurity policies and procedures across all divisions and corporate functions,” the company said.

“McClurg will be responsible for identifying, evaluating and reporting on information security risks to the executive team, and serve as a company evangelist of best practices in cybersecurity,’’ according to the statement.

BlackBerry (NYSE: BB) also said it had promoted Christopher Hummel, vice president of IT and business application solutions, to the post of chief information officer.

Cylance was purchased by the Canadian company for $1.4 billion in February. BlackBerry shares rose 2.6% to $5.21 and a $2.8 billion market cap today in New York.
