AROUND THE COUNTY

ANAHEIM

A solar plant is under construction at the headquarters of Kinsbursky Brothers Inc., a recycler of automotive and other batteries as well as electronics. The building is going up on the company’s campus alongside the Riverside (91) Freeway and will house 88,000 square feet of solar panels to supply power to Kinsbursky’s buildings. Brea-based G&W Builders Inc. is the contractor. Irvine-based DRI Energy Corp. is providing the solar panels. The panels are expected to generate about $5,000 worth of electricity a month. The $3 million project is funded by Kinsbursky, which previously used the land for storage. Construction started in May and is scheduled to finish in October. The building is in addition to two others Kinsbursky built in 2003, when the company moved operations from Santa Fe Springs to Anaheim. One building has office and warehouse space; the other is a waste storage site.

PLACENTIA

A medical office plaza is almost done near Rose Drive and Yorba Linda Boulevard. The plaza is being built on the prior site of Tommie’s Pharmacy, which temporarily relocated during construction and is set to reopen as part of the new complex. Phase one began in 2009 with the construction of a parking structure. Phase two includes a two-story building and an additional underground parking structure. The plaza is expected to open in the fall. Los Angeles-based Harouni-Hafco Architect Consulting is the architect and general contractor. Brea-based Hakanson Construction Inc. completed the concrete portions of the building.

Another medical plaza is planned near Rose Drive and Yorba Linda Boulevard. The project calls for a 13,000-square-foot complex set to open in late 2011. The land originally was used for housing, which was cleared to make way for medical offices. Atlanta-based BMI Holdings Inc. bought the land after the previous developer was unable to get financing for the project. BMI is looking to get city approval by September. Orthopedic and plastic surgery doctors have expressed interest in the plaza, according to BMI. The architect is Fresno-based Anthony C. Pings & Associates.

SANTA ANA

Santa Ana High School is undergoing an upgrade and expansion designed to modernize and relieve overcrowding at the campus. Portable classroom trailers are being replaced by a 36,000-square-foot building set to open in late 2011. The building is expected to have 29 classrooms, a walkway and an elevator. The building’s cost is about $9 million and is being funded by state and local money. The project was designed by Irvine-based HMC Architects and Tustin-based Ghataode Bannon Architects. The school’s existing buildings also will see several upgrades, including new fire alarms, air conditioning and repaved asphalt. The upgrades are expected to cost about $20 million. Santa Ana High School was started more than a century ago and is the county’s oldest and largest high school.

BREA

The Pointe Apartment Homes are set to open in September near the Orange (57) Freeway and Lambert Road. The $50 million, 260-apartment complex began in 2008. The land previously was used as a parking lot. Newport Beach-based Olen Properties Corp. is the developer. The company developed the apartments as part of its Olen Pointe Brea campus, which includes offices and restaurants. The contractor is Lake Forest-based Sanders Construction Services. The architect is Santa Ana-based Nestor & Gaffney Architecture LLP.

FULLERTON

A Carl’s Jr. restaurant near Yorba Linda and Kraemer boulevards has been demol-ished and is being rebuilt. It should reopen in October with a drive-through window. Construction began in June. The building will be about 3,000 square feet, which is slightly smaller than the original. Ontario-based JG Construction is the contractor. The architect is Atlanta-based Greenberg Farrow.
