OC Automakers Set Records in April

The March sales momentum carried into April as many OC automakers notched records last month.

Hyundai Motor America Inc. of Fountain Valley saw sales jump 128% from the year-ago period to 77,523 vehicles in April. Sales were led by the crossover Tucson, which saw 16,901 units sold in the month, up 100% from a year earlier. The month marked the automaker’s best month for sales performance, beating March’s record volume.

Irvine-based Kia Motors America Inc. sold 70,177 vehicles in April, up 121.3% from a year earlier. The automaker reported strong sales of the mid-size K5 and compact Forte. April was Kia’s best ever monthly performance, following March’s record high.

Mazda North American Operations said sales in April jumped 184.4% from a year earlier to 31,117 vehicles. The Irvine-based automaker’s sales were driven by its crossovers, the CX-30 and CX-5, and CX-9 SUV.

Genesis Motor America Inc. of Fountain Valley said sales reached an all-time high in April, increasing 309% from the year-ago period to 3,294 vehicles. The luxury automaker’s GV80 SUV led sales with 1,895 sold.

Electric vehicle makers Rivian LLC and Karma Automotive LLC, both of Irvine, do not currently report their monthly sales.
