OC Automakers Report Record February Sales

Three of Orange County’s major automakers released February sales reports today, with several reporting record sales for the month.

Fountain Valley-based Hyundai Motor America said it continued its streak of record-breaking sales, reporting an increase of 19% year-over-year in total February retail sales. 

Hyundai reported 52,424 total units were sold, up 8% from February 2021, with large rises in three of the automaker’s SUV models – Tucson sales jumped 37%, Palisade rose 17%, and Venue grew 16%. 

SUV retail sales were up 32% making up 77% of Hyundai’s retail volume. The company did not have any fleet sales last month, it said. 

Mazda North American Operations in Irvine reported 28,166 vehicles sold, up 8.3% from February 2021. The automaker reported its best-ever February sales for the CX-5 and CX-9 models, with 16,404 and 3,803 vehicles sold respectively. 

Year-to-date sales fell 3.9% with 49,245 vehicles sold compared to the same time last year. 

Irvine-based Kia America reported a year-over-year increase of 2.3% for February, selling 49,182 units total. Kia’s EV models had its best monthly performance, breaking its previous record set in September 2021 by 181%. The automaker’s Niro line of electrified crossovers also saw its best February sales, with 3,008 units sold.  

Additional record-breaking February sales included Kia’s Telluride, selling 7,618 vehicles, and the K5/Optima, with 6,558 units sold, it said.
