When he was 15 years old, Eric Goodman’s drastically bent spine was causing his ribs to start puncturing his lungs, with the potential to kill him.
Spinal surgery at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital in 1991 and a taxing recovery period saved his life and set him on the road to helping others, while running a profitable supply and distribution business.
“I got a second chance,” said Goodman, whose Mountain View Services Inc. is based in Newport Beach. “So many people had cared for me that now I needed to pay back and take care of others.”
Mountain View Services has been a supplier of groceries, medical supplies, janitorial supplies, nutritional supplements and incontinent-care supplies to healthcare and other facilities since 1988.
The company also supplies durable medical equipment, personal supplies, safety and facility supplies, linens, and office supplies to the facilities.
Mountain View serves more than 500 care facilities for developmentally disabled adults and children, home care facilities, hospice care companies, nonprofits, schools, care centers and homeless shelters.
The company says it saves clients time and money by reducing labor costs, employee liability, vehicle cost and theft.
The company supports over 3,500 developmentally disabled adults and children daily, a service it has been providing for more than 35 years.
Mountain View was recognized at the Business Journal’s Family-Owned Business Awards, in the medium-size firm category, on May 31 at the Irvine Marriott. Goodman is the company’s CEO and president.
$30M Revenue
Since December 2020, Goodman has been the sole shareholder in the company, which pulls in about $30 million in revenue per year.
“My whole family is involved in the business,” Goodman said, including his two children, son-in-law and wife.
Goodman says Mountain View Services recently acquired his father’s janitorial supply company.
“We’ve been in business for 35 years,” according to Goodman, noting that the company now spans three generations. Mountain View Services has about 50 employees.
While five people are at the headquarters in Newport Beach, the majority are the distribution centers in Redlands and San Bernardino, according to Goodman.
The company is unique in that it delivers both food and medical supplies on the same truck, Goodman said.
“As far as I know, I’m the only one in the state of California who does that,” said Goodman, who is locally well known for his charitable work and community engagement.
Medicare, Medi-Cal
Mountain View is an accredited Medicare and Medi-Cal provider.
“I often joke and laugh and tell people I’m a for-profit acting like a nonprofit because I’m funded by Medi-Cal and Medicare.”
He’s not interested in major expansion plans, despite occasional offers from investors and those who want to set up a similar business in another state.
“At this point, I just want to focus on myself and my family and taking care of others,” Goodman said. “I just really want to keep it in the family for now.”
Goodman himself is an award-winning, nationally published photographer whose work has appeared in galleries and is also offered for sale on his website.
