Mr. Stox to Stock Edwards’ Ranch; Ducks Big Bucks

Mr. Stox ended its decades-long run on Katella Avenue in Anaheim earlier this month, but its website still lists a phone number and email address for anyone who might have “unfinished business with us.” Looks like there might be some business to finish up just down the road with Extron Electronics boss Andrew Edwards, whose Ranch Restaurant & Saloon is about a mile away from Mr. Stox, on the ground floor of his company’s Ball Road headquarters. Word has it that the folks at Mr. Stox will direct their customers to the Ranch. Don’t know if there’s any formal agreement between the two restaurants or whether the referrals include banquet business—a niche Edwards has taken on with an expansion of the Ranch that includes dining rooms and kitchens on the sixth floor of Extron’s HQ …

Broadcom boss Henry Samueli hasn’t spared money or time in getting his other OC calling card—the Anaheim Ducks—beyond the bitter aftertaste of the recent strike that nearly wrecked the season. Local hockey fans have done likewise, rewarding Samueli with a franchise record, standing-room-only crowd of 17,610 at the Honda Center for the Ducks’ win against the NHL-leading Chicago Blackhawks. The Ducks have committed a little more than $140 million to three players—goalie Viktor Fasth, center Ryan Getzlaf and forward Corey Perry—in the past month or so. Getzlaf ($66 million) and Perry ($69 million) each got eight-year deals, the longest allowed by the league …

Samueli is a big basketball fan, and he also owns Anaheim Arena Management, the outfit that runs the Honda Center. Bet he’ll agree that the UCI men’s basketball team deserved better than the announced attendance of 6,795 for the recent Big West tournament final, where they came up short against Pacific …

The Anteaters got it together in the second half of the season, reeling off a nine-game winning streak on their home court at the Bren Center and reaching 20 wins when they toppled regular-season champ Long Beach State in the conference tourney, keeping their rival out of the NCAA tournament. That got UCI a berth in the CollegeInsider.com tournament, a relative upstart that continues this week, despite some fans who wonder why teams even bother with it. This Insider says UCI has every reason to play in the little-watched tournament, which gives them a chance to build some muscle memory of what they’ve done right on their late-season run as they look forward to adding a couple of 7-foot recruits next year …

Jane Yu’s story on Placentia-based strawberry processor Sunrise Growers~Frozsun Foods Inc. (page 1) is a reminder of the substantial residue of OC’s agricultural roots. Sunrise recently doubled down on local history, tapping former California Strawberry Commission President Mark Murai as vice president of strategy and development. He brings first-hand experience, thanks to his family ties to Murai Farms in Santa Ana…

Chapman University President Jim Doti is a prototypical OCer, but his Chicago swagger still shows through on occasion—especially when he goes Hollywood. Doti recently walked on for a role in The Bold and the Beautiful soap opera, which counts Chapman University grad Casey Kasprzyk as a producer. Our Mediha DiMartino reports that Doti had four lines in the script—and delivered another after his star turn, telling his fans that the crew nicknamed him “One-Take Doti.”
