The S&P 500 fell 0.14% to 1,561.31 in afternoon trading Friday.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.26% to 14,501.49, while the Nasdaq was off 0.16% to 3,253.78.
The yield on a 10-year treasury bond fell 1.48% to 2%.
The price of gold rose 0.13% to $1,592.80 per ounce.
Shares of Santa Ana-based disk drive maker STEC Inc. were down about 11% to $4.91 for a market value of $227.56 million. STEC on Thursday reported fourth-quarter earnings and guidance for the current quarter that fell below analyst expectations.
Irvine-based Edwards Lifesciences Corp. was down about 3% to $83.18 for a market value of $9.5 billion. The heart valve maker is down 9.7% so far this year.
