The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.31% to 14,046.11, while the Nasdaq was off 0.32% to 3,159.53.
The yield on a 10-year treasury bond rose 0.86% to 1.87%.
The price of gold was up 0.07% to $1,573 per ounce.
Shares of Newport Beach specialty chemicals maker American Vanguard Corp. were up about 7% to $30.75 for a market value of $875.16 million. Specialty materials company Ferro Corp. saw its shares jump about 33% in afternoon trading Monday to a market value of $594.08 million after plastics maker A. Schulman Inc. put in a $563 million bid for the company. Ferro’s Board of Directors rejected the offer.
Newport Beach-based patent licensing company Acacia Research Corp. fell 4% to $26.56, after closing down about 7.5% last week. Acacia had a recent market value of $1.29 billion.
Shares of Huntington Beach-based BJ’s Restaurants Inc. fell about 4% to $29.30 for a market value of $829.82 million. Restaurant companies were generally mixed in midday trading Monday.
