The S&P 500 was up 1.98% to 1,431.
The yield on a 10-year treasury bond was up 4.71% to 1.67%.
The price of gold rose 0.59% to $1,704.
Shares of Newport Beach-based specialty chemical maker American Vanguard Corp. rose about 7% to $32 for a recent market value of $880 million. Competitor Aceto Corp. of New York was also up about 2% to $9 for a recent market value of $246 million.
