The Nasdaq was off 0.52% to 3,001 in midday trading Tuesday, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 1.63% to 13,128.

The S&P 500 fell 1.29% to 1,415.

The yield on a 10-year treasury bond was off 1.89% to 1.76%.

The price of gold was down 0.94% to $1,714 per ounce.

Shares of Newport Beach-based patent licensing company Acacia Research Corp. rose about 5% to $25 for a market value of $1.2 billion.

Irvine-based Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide Inc. fell about 12% to $0.63 for a market value of $30 million. Automakers, which make up a key customer base for Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies, were generally down in midday trading.
