Advanced Medical Makes $20M Acquisition

Santa Ana-based eye device maker Advanced Medical Optics Inc. said Tuesday it bought WaveFront Sciences Inc. of Albuquerque, N.M., for $20 million.

Advanced Medical paid $14 million in cash upfront for WaveFront and agreed to make up to $6 million in contingent payments in the next three years.

WaveFront, which has about 50 workers, makes diagnostic systems for vision correction surgery and medical research.

Its main devices are called aberrometers, which precisely measure the total refractive error and wavefront aberrations of the eye as part of the wavefront-guided custom laser vision correction surgery.

Buying WaveFront “represents another step forward in AMO’s strategy to provide a full range of products and services that meet the needs of comprehensive refractive practices,” Chief Executive James Mazzo said.

Advanced Medical made a big splash in the laser vision market earlier this month, when it said it’s spending $808 million for IntraLase Corp., which makes lasers used in the first stage of laser vision correction surgery.
