Orange County-based companies are helping fuel the hype for ultra high-definition TVs—one of the hot trends at the 2013 International Consumer Electronics Show this week in Las Vegas.
Orange-based Westinghouse Digital LLC showcased a 65-inch 4K TV and a 50-inch set that converts 1080p HD pictures into ultra-HD, which has four times higher resolution than the current standard.
The company used a Sony Blu-Ray player with traditional HD to demonstrate the picture upgrade.
The Westinghouse ultra-HD sets are expected to be available in the coming months, along with a 55-inch version. Retail prices will range from about $2,500 to $4,000, according to the company.
Westinghouse’s showstopper was its 110-inch model, which won’t be available at traditional retailers.
“This is a custom order at this point,” spokesman Brett Hunt said.
An ultra-HD TV from Toshiba’s Digital Products Division, a unit of Irvine-based Toshiba America Information Systems Inc., also drew a crowd on the floor of the Las Vegas Convention Center.
The Toshiba unit is targeting a March release date for its new line, dubbed Toshiba L9300 Series UltraHD LED TVs. The sets are powered by Toshiba’s 4K core processor, and provide clearer resolution, rich color and crisp surface images.
The L9300 Series will be available in 58-, 65- and 84-inch sizes.
Irvine-based Broadcom Corp. earlier this week presented the first ultra-HD TV home gateway chip at CES. The chip is expected to improve CPU processing and enable home networking, supporting video-on-demand, gaming, social media and other applications.
