The S&P 500 was up 0.3% to 2,084.03 in midday trading.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.6% to 18,058.79 and the Nasdaq fell 0.3% to 4,768.97.
The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond rose 2.4% to 2.21%.
The price of gold declined 0.2% to $1,177.80.
RETAIL
Anaheim-based Pacific Sunwear of California Inc. was up 4.1% to $2.07 and a market cap of $143 million on a buyout offer floated for American Apparel, a clothing maker and retailer. Shares in PacSun are up about 20% this month.
TECHNOLOGY
Irvine-based multimedia company Ubiquity Inc. was down 25.1% to 56 cents and a market cap of $57.5 million on high volume. Shares are down about 90% in the last three months.
SERVICES
Irvine-based oil and gas developer New Western Energy Corp. is down 1.7% to a market cap of about $4.9 million. The company said it formed a new, majority-owned subsidiary with Forward Energy LLC called NWE Forward Energy LLC to drill for oil and natural gas in south-central Montana.
