The S&P 500 was up 0.26% to 1,878.60 in afternoon trading Thursday.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.46% to 16,434.92, while the Nasdaq was down 0.06% to 4,355.48.
The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond rose 1.11% to 2.73%.
The price of gold was up 0.82% to $1,351.30 per ounce.
RESTAURANTS
Huntington Beach-based BJ’s Restaurants Inc. jumped about 21% to $33.60, after two activist investors said in filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission that they intended to each nominate five representatives for election to the chain’s board. BJ’s said Thursday it is reviewing the nominations. The company had a recent market value of $952.69 million.
HEALTHCARE
Aliso Viejo-based drug maker Avanir Pharmaceuticals Inc. fell back about 8% to $4.58 after closing up 17% on Wednesday. Avanir had a recent market value of $697.62 million.
