The S&P 500 declined 1.2% in midday trading to 2,919.32.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was 0.9% lower at 26,338.22.
The Nasdaq fell 1.7% to 7,973.38.
The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond was down 1.6% to 1.86%.
The price of gold ticked up 1.8% to $1,458.
The price of oil jumped 3.2% to $55.69 a barrel.

El Pollo Loco Holdings Inc. (Nasdaq: LOCO) jumped 11% to $10.85 and a $417 million market cap. The Costa Mesa-based Mexican fast food chain yesterday reported second quarter revenue and adjusted profit that topped analysts’ expectations.
REAL ESTATE
Sunstone Hotel Investors Inc. (NYSE: SHO) was 4.7% higher to $13.45 and a $3.1 billion market cap. The Aliso Viejo-based REIT reported second quarter funds from operations that exceeded expectations.
