Indexes rose in midday trading after Chinese President Xi Jinping eased tensions about a potential trade war between China and the U.S.
The S&P 500 rose 1.6% to 2,654.27. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 1.7% to 24,395.05, and the Nasdaq increased 1.7% to 7,065.05.
The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond increased 0.5% to 2.80%.
The price of gold rose 0.2% to $1,342.
