HB’s Shorebreak Gets New Staff

The 157-room Shorebreak Hotel in Huntington Beach has hired new management staff following its purchase this year by a Bethesda, Md.-based real estate investment trust.

San Francisco-based Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants named Brent McNally the hotel’s general manager, Gene Smallwood director of sales and marketing, and Blake Brissette-Mathias head of food and beverage. Damon Kelly, chef at Shorebreak’s Zimzala Restaurant & Bar, was retained after the transition.

The hotel sold in February for $58.5 million, or $373,000 per room, to DiamondRock Hospitality Co.

DiamondRock brought on Kimpton to manage the hotel, which was managed prior to the sale by Joie de Vivre Hotels, also in San Francisco.

The REIT said at the time that the hotel had 2014 revenue per available room of about $176 and average daily rates of $213, and that it was 83% occupied.

The Shorebreak is part of the Strand mixed-use development across from the Huntington Beach Pier at Fifth Street and Pacific Coast Highway. The 97,000-square-foot retail part of the Strand was also sold this year, to Dallas-based Cypress Equities for an estimated $64 million.

Los Angeles-based real estate investor and developer CIM Group opened the Strand in 2008. The 3.5-acre mixed-use project was developed for a reported $90 million.

The retail portion and the hotel were first listed for sale in 2012.
